Well we promised you a blog about three special places, and the Gorilla BBQ is the third. Besides hearing scuttlebut about their food, this place was also featured on Triple D. So of course we added it to our list of places to visit.
Located on the Cabrillo Hwy in Pacifica, it is housed in a bright orange freight car and is strictly take out. There are a couple of picnic tables and a small parking lot. If the weather is good the tables are the place to go, however, the weather here can be a problem so the car is probably your best bet unless you know of some where else to go in the area.
The BBQ opens at 8 and closes when the food is gone. If you see smoke they are open, no smoke, no food. The menu is straight to the point like all BBQ places. They have three combo plates - 11.25, 15.25 and 19.50. Depending on which on you order you have your choice of 1,2 or three meats, and every plate then gets a choice of 2 sides, cornbread with beans and rice.
Choice of meats include: pork ribs, chicken, hot links, brisket and pulled pork. Sides are: potato salad, beans over rice, coleslaw, corn on the cob and mac and cheese. You can also get a sandwich combo with your choice of meats and sides as well as a veggie and kids combo.
This is a Texas style BBQ, but to us the sauce was one dimensional and tasted mostly of paprika, Even extra sauce didn’t help. The slaw that we had was fresh and crunchy but unfortunately the dressing was bland. The mac and cheese was good, too bad it wasn’t warmer because when we later heated some of it up it was really creamy and cheesy. The corn bread was good although on the sweet side and the beans and rice were good but needed salt.
Standout though was the meat, The beef ribs were big and juicy with lots of meat and the brisket was perfectly cooked. The pulled pork was cooked to perfection, but unfortunately it fell victim to the sauce.
The staff is great, very helpful and friendly and they get the orders out quickly, which is really important since this is a very popular place.
We give Gorilla Barbeque three and ½ napkins
